About the Recipe

This is a good start to the day if one's appetite is poor and one is not really feeling like eating. The first stage of digestion is done for you when food has been blended. It is easier on the stomach and can be a very useful way of absorbing nutrients when one is going through treatment or not particularly hungry.

Ingredients

  • ½ ripe banana

  • 1 cup frozen or fresh berries

  • 2 handfuls spinach leaves

  • 1 handful baby kale (baby kale leaves are softer — omit if not available or replace with butterhead lettuce)

  • ⅓ cup coconut milk or water

  • 1 tsp hemp protein

  • 1 date, pitted (optional for sweeter taste)

  • 1 tsp spirulina powder (optional)

Preparation

Step 1

Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Step 2

If the appetite is reduced, sip a little at a time throughout the day.

Anti-inflammatory, greens support the liver and will help with maintaining weight. The addition of spirulina powder — a blue-green algae — will increase the protein, B vitamins and antioxidant content of the smoothie.
